Liz Christy Bowery Houston Community Garden
Neighborhood: East Village
Type of Place: Community Garden
Description:
Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, this sliver of lush green space in the Bowery is the perfect spot for a breather. Located on the corner of Bowery and Houston Street, the garden was built in 1973 on what was once was family farm owned by Peter Stuvesant. In the 1970s when the area fell into decline, activist Liz Christy was able to convince the city to turn the abandoned space into a community garden which still exists today with lush green plants, flowers and trees, as well areas for sitting along a narrow path.
