Description:
Love, Adorned, the new Nolita boutique by tattoo maven and jewelry designer Lori Leven, might be the best spot in New York to channel your inner rock star. After more than 15 years of running New York Adorned, the revered tattoo shop in the East Village, Leven let her passion for acquiring hand-crafted works of art evolve into supplying the masses with well-made, natural home goods as well as personal accessories, unique gifts, and a wonderful and eclectic collection of jewelry.
Leven’s aesthetic is precise. You won’t find anything machine made at Love, Adorned. In fact, the experience of shopping there feels dynamic, like there’s a positive energy field surrounding the handpicked artists’ works. Come by and let your mind wander. You’ll experience aromatic and woodsy aromas, gorgeous Moroccan wedding blankets or handira, made in the Berber regions of Northern Africa, vintage Navajo rugs, handmade bags from Southeast Asia, and a variety of luxurious soaps, moisturizers, and enough incense and potions to ward off any evil that hexes your good spirits. Love,
Adorned also stocks a variety of ceramic wares by artists who make wonderful organic forms that feel just right in the hand and that often serve practical purposes. Laura Zindel’s ceramics (pictured) display her detailed drawing skills etched directly into the clay and showcase an array of creepy, crawly and unexpected designs, while Alyssa Ettinger’s milk bottles feel perfect for Sunday brunch. Other gift-worthy items at Love, Adorned include forest silhouette lanterns (images of trees inside them flicker as candles burn), $22, Portuguese bottle openers, $25, and hand-knitted puppets and plush from $15.
The best feature of Love, Adorned, however, is Leven’s knack for selecting unique and often limited-edition jewelry made by local and far-flung designers. Recently named “Best Funky Jewelry Store” by New York Magazine, Leven carefully curates the classics, which include artful designs by Nick Potash, Katie Finn, Kiki Smith, and Suzannah Wainhouse, whose brass key pendant is a favorite of Strokes’ leader Julian Casablancas. Designs by British artist Polly Wales feature a selection of chunky, colorful rings created in the process of lost wax casting.
Expect plenty here to satisfy the pickiest of boyfriends, as well as several items to add to your own personal wish list. For instance, we love the mesh gauntlet ring by Made Her Think, all of the pieces by Better Late Than Never, and Leven’s own line of necklaces from her Sacred Geometry Collection (pictured). In between trying to narrow your choices, you’ll be hard-pressed not to develop an instant weakness for Michelle Quan’s porcelain skulls, $275, vintage sake sets, $125, all-weather field notebooks, $20, or Filson dog beds, which come highly recommended by Birdy, Leven’s Affenpincher, a cute little black dog that hangs out at the store. Come by and spread the love.
