Love Saves the Day
Neighborhood: East Village
Type of Place: Thrift Shops
Description:
Love for vintage is what keeps this East Village shop in business. Upon first glance you might think you've stumbled upon an attick that hasn't been cleaned since the bicentennial. But it's a great find for the kid in everyone.
Dusty shelves are stacked high with warped boxes of Tinker Toys and games Toys r Us hasn't carried in over 30 years. The glass cases in back of the store hold every plastic toy you've ever coveted. The Smurfs' entire cast, Star Wars characters, Gremlins, and WWF superstars all line the shelves. If the mom who said the Betty Boop bobble head doll wouldn't be a collectors item could see her now ($75).
With a Daffy Duck megaphone in one hand I sorted through the tin lunch pails till I found my favorite superhero - Superman ($15). I also found a pair of I Love Lucy pjs ($35).
If you're looking for a real blast from the past flip through the 1960's/1970's Playboys ($15)(they're all in plastic covers boys). LSTD even carries a Pez collection that'd put Jerry Seinfeld's to shame. If you're into vinyl - you can take your pick here. Highlights include the Partridge Family's Greatest Hits, Captain and Tenille (45), and UB40 ($6). Bottom line, U don't have to B 40 to love this store. - Merideth Beasley 5/9/04
