"These are made by my really good friend," says Alex, the owner of Love Shine in Williamsburg, as he shows customers his stock. He says this often--each designer, it would seem, is his friend. But given his cheerful and welcoming demeanor, that's not too hard to imagine. Presiding over this cheerful shop filled with intriguing and lovely little items, Alex has created a unique, friendly, and often also environment-friendly place to shop.
There's a ton to look through here, but I especially loved the bracelet cuffs made from recycled records, designed by someone called Monkey for a group called WRecords and handmade in Williamsburg, in floral or geometric patterns and very cool ($18, or 2 for $25); Gecko Traders' tote bags made from recycled rice bags (from $26; proceeds go to the needy in Cambodia); and the bags made from recycled candy wrappers (from $24; proceeds benefit the cooperativa de la Montana Comayagua, in Honduras).
Much of the jewelry is locally made, as are lavendar sachets (pack of 2 for $10). Great-looking Love Shine tote bags in cheery prints (designed by Mark Seamon, who owns and runs the *other* Love Shine, in the East Village) are currently a real bargain at $26 for two. The day I visited, there was also a sale on fantastic journals, some one-of-kind, ($10 for 2). Another fun and practical unisex gift would be a hipsterish (but not too attitudinal) wallet from ducti, $28. Alex explained that he was waiting for new craft shipments from Mexico and Peru; but I like the metal roses (made of juice cans!) from Mexico that he already has ($22 each) as well as a lovely blue-glass pitcher handmade there ($46).
