Description:
As we wipe the sweat from our brows and slide into fall, here's a secret about clothes for the season: You can turn to the sale racks of spring/summer clothes for some great options. Look for neutrals in heartier fabrics and great choices in red. Think about what you can pair with a cardigan and your fall wardrobe will start to take shape, at great prices—with the added advantage of getting to turn to those same clothes next spring.

This strategy will be very useful at Lucia, an adorable boutique in Cobble Hill. I ducked in after a visit to the neighborhood's "Double D" pool on another hot summer day. (By the way, if you're reading this before Labor Day, when the pool closes, take note: The lap lane is now off-limits, due to a back-to-school-based lifeguard shortage. I swam laps anyway, but it wasn't the easiest task. However, the water felt great!) Everything here is cute; and you might well consider some of the "definitely summer" sale items, like dresses in pinks, purples, and white, for next summer. But if you want stuff you can wear now, you're in luck, especially as "fall florals" are big this season. Among the choices: a gauze spaghetti-strap dress in navy, with orange and yellow flowers down the front (was $60, now $30; pair with tights and, later, a sweater); a cotton halter dress in brown, with pink, fucsia, and yellow flowers (was $72, now $55); a short-sleeved mini-dress (which can also be worn as a long blouse, due to an elastic waist) in red, gold, and blue flowered rayon (was $55, now $48); an office-friendly long-sleeved light sweater in blue or beige (was $45, now $38);
a t-shirt in grey/black or red/black stripes with a cute zippered pocket (was $42, now $36); a short-sleeved blouse in blue/black light flannel plaid (was $60, now $30); a cap-sleeved, Mexican-inspired dress with a v-neck and flowers at the neck, waist, and hem; and perhaps the bargain-find of the day, a dress with a black t-shirt top and a red/black light flannel plaid skirt (was $88, now $25!).

Today it seems too hot to go the distance to the Sunset Park pool, which I've been wanting to try. But soon we'll be pulling on our cardigans—and these clothes will be there for the warmer and the cooler days. As for the Sunset Park pool: I look forward to hopping in next summer!
