Description:
Although Marmalade certainly has great clothes, we were initially drawn
to it by the music that poured from its doorway on a warm afternoon.
That music—fresh and enthusiastic but somehow shot through with
traces of melancholy, too—turned out to be the Langley Schools Music
Project collection, recorded decades ago but released to the public
only in the last few years. It features a chorus of
elementary-schoolers
from Canada singing hits by, among others, the Beatles, the Beach
Boys, Bowie, and, well, Barry (as in Manilow); and its dreamy,
evocative
mood matches well the spirit of this artistically curated
new-and-vintage shop.

Marmalade (so called because its owner, Hannah Kurland, found a
large letter M at a second-hand shop, decided to use it in the sign for
her as-yet-nameless store, and, soon after, happened to spot the word
"marmalade" in a copy of "British Vogue") has been in this spot since
1998, starting out small and expanding in 2001. We loved lots of the
vintage wares, including a pair of lace-up wedges in rainbow stripes
($75), an Yves Saint Laurent prairie skirt ($125), and, on the sale
rack
(not a constant feature at the shop, but it's worth checking for), a
sporty
sundress in khaki, mustard, and white ($35).

Kurland is also a designer, and her craftsy, vintage-inspired pieces
can
also be found here: hand-printed silk T-shirts and camisoles (from
$85); sweatshirts appliqued with vintage fabric (from $125); bubble
skirts ($175); and sundresses (from $240).

Why run a shop like this in addition to working on her own designs?
Kurland's answer is one to which anyone who loves the thrill of a
fantastic find will immediately relate: "It gives me the opportunity to
shop—and to have these beautiful things in my hands for a while
before we find them new homes." We say their temporary home of
Marmalade is a pretty great one, too.
