Beautiful summer afternoon, dance music spilling onto lower Broadway...and a sale! I was drawn into Mavi by its cheery vibe; I stayed for the cute clothes, good deals, and friendly-but-not-in-your-face staff.
The mood at Mavi matched the brightness of the day. I bopped to the music as I checked out the racks, and I appreciated the store's spaciousness and its helpers who seemed there to help but not to hover. The Mavi brand originates in Turkey, and this is its only U.S. shop. More locally, it has a partnership with Brooklyn Industries; it carries some of that brand's items, and vice versa.
I was struck by the fact that much of the stock here, though of-the-moment, is also very versatile. A dark grey tailored short-sleeve dress with silver stars on the shoulder (now $39, was $88) will work in the spring and the fall as well as right now. A long cotton tiered skirt in royal blue (now $49, was $78) could also work as a dress or a pool cover-up. And a Brooklyn Industries miniskirt in purple with a leaf pattern (an amazing $19.99 on sale) will work beautifully today or, with tights, in the spring and fall. I also loved a grey plaid button-down short-sleeve shirt with a tapered waist, on sale for $29, and a gorgeous grey sun dress with a bright floral skirt ($78), appropriate for work or even for a casual wedding. My home borough is well represented with a Brooklyn Industries t-shirt for men or women that poses the word "Brooklyn" as the frame of a bicycle ($24, in red and white or purple and gold) and reminded me of my own beloved t-shirt that reads "Bikesexual." There are also men's shirts, denim basics for men and women, and a few well-placed accessories.
Whether you need an outfit for a beach vacation, a little something for the office, or a party ensemble, you'll be in luck here. Who knows—you might find some items that suit all of these occasions and more. Now that's what I call a good deal.
