Not amongst the typical shops you will find reviews for here at Cititour, Michael’s Holy Land Gifts is aptly named. Walking in, you will feel a sudden rush of peace and tranquility and a quietness not due to lack of patrons, but because the shop is infused with an inexplicable sacredness. It is the place to go if you are in need of Christian-related items like rosary beads, bibles, crosses, angel statues, saint figurines and more.
The service is just as you would want it to be for a shop such as this one. You will typically find a salesperson sitting behind a display case of rosaries either reading or engaged in another quiet activity. He will greet you warmly, invite you to ask any questions if needed, and then leave you to browse at your leisure.
Where to begin in terms of Michael’s inventory? First, it is important to note that most of the items you find here are crafted in Italy, Bethlehem or Jerusalem – so we are talking about the real deal here, not just trinkets you stumble across in Chinatown. The shop carries a full line of Bibles that will run you anywhere from $5 - $30 from simple children’s versions to more sophisticated, gold-leaf Bibles and all those in between. There is an amazing number of rosaries here including simple ones with wooden prayer beads to those featuring birthstones. You can expect prices to range from about $10 to about $60.
Crucifixes are also in abundance here and you can choose from wooden ones with prayers inscribed on them ($10) to those hand-crafted from olive wood made in Bethlehem and more costly copper crucifixes, as well as those made of 18KT sterling ($40 - $60), too. You’ll find a statue for every saint and angel, guardian angel medals, novena and prayer books, home décor, and smaller items like key-chains, auto-visor clips and bottles of Holy Water ($1.99 a bottle).
Anything you do not see at Michael’s Holy Land of Gifts can be specially ordered. I inquired about their saint/funeral cards regarding a recent passing in my family and the salesperson offered a bulk discount, so keep that in mind if you are in need of a lot of one item. Bay Ridge has a large and thriving Christian community, but even if you are not Christian (like me), you may find an item at Michael’s that will appeal to your spiritual side. I encourage you to give this blessed “boutique” a visit.
