Description:
How's this for a new year's resolution? A pillow placed on a little love seat in Mint Julep says, "To thine own self be nice." Some of my takes on this: eat healthily; keep your body strong; see loved ones in person as often as you can; do what you can to reduce stress levels; and be gentle with yourself if you fall short on any of these things. And get said loved ones presents now and again—remembering to keep yourself on the "loved ones" list.
I was drawn into Mint Julep, on the Lower East Side, by its charming window display and by the "sale" sign outside. As things happened, the sale was so good that I decided to feature only sale items in this piece. Of course the full-price items are fabulous as well, but bargains are always welcome things.
Humming to the girl-group tunes on the sound system, I browsed the sale racks and found: a color-block sweater-dress in grey, black, red, and ivory that's dressy enough for a work meeting, cute enough for dinner out, and $58 on sale; a tunic in black with a maroon-and-gold print that could be a minidress with tights or a long blouse with leggings or jeans, on sale for $48; a grey striped sweater with a big, snuggly cowl collar, on sale for $64; a red sleeveless tank dress (layer it with a jacket or sweater now and wear it alone come summer), on sale for $78; and an adorable cocktail dress with a pleated grey skirt and a sequined top, $68 on sale.
Then I discovered the $20 baskets! And in them I found: a long purple wraparound blouse (will work great with a tank top and leggings); a dark grey chunky-knit shawl (with arm holes to wear the shawl lower and help avoid the "Amish look"); and scarves, hats, and mittens to be embraced now, plus a few lovely summer dresses for the months to come. There are also charming summer espadrilles, also for $20—but be careful on sizes as they run small (as I learned by trying on).
I almost didn't look at the scented candles, as they are rarely on sale and are almost always a bit overpriced. The candles here are not on sale, but, hurrah, neither are they overpriced. And the scents! $18 buys one large candle from the sweetly names Aunt Sadie line; the Apple Pie and Orange Cream fragrances are just dreamy and will help make any new year that much sweeter.
