Now that DUMBO has muscle as one of Brooklyn’s most interesting neighborhoods, we were delighted to stop by Modern Anthology to see what sort of accessories and home goods inspire owners Becka Citron and John Marsala, interior designers and creators of the DIY Network show, Man Caves.
Billed as a man’s shop, Modern Anthology has much to offer in handsome home furnishings, industrial art and signage, lighting fixtures, as well as an array of home goods, such as vintage barware and even that metal pencil sharpener your dad had screwed to the wall in the garage. In between the British road signs and leather couches, look for high-quality skin care cleansers and shaving creams, dopp kits and duffels by Ernest Alexander (from $160), and beautiful accessories like silk ties, leather belts from World War II ($72), and elegant umbrellas with carved wooden handles ($75). Look also for a small but attractive collection of seasonal men's designer apparel and jackets.
The inventory at Modern Anthology is nothing if not eclectic, mixing antique metal toys with rugby shirts, mounted insects, and vintage Playboys. If it sounds confusing, it needn’t be. Modern Anthology is selling an experience. Shopping there is like entering the closet of a close friend who is a collector of all things old and dependable, a curious fellow who likes taxidermy, is well traveled and has amazing taste in luggage.
We love the screen prints of public underground transportation systems (from $65), the store’s vast selection of vintage globes (from $95), and how images of the British road signs from double-decker bus routes have found new life as text on giant-sized pillows (from $145). But Modern Anthology is also there to help you tell your own story. They can assist you in ways you never thought possible, from designing your own unique wallpaper to covering hardware like doorknobs in fine hand-stitched leather.
As a design duo, Citron and Marsala have an impressive client list and a portfolio of equally amazing spaces they’ve created including restaurants, recreational studios, sets, and residential homes. The modern Anthology Design team is made up of architects, filmmakers, interior, graphic, and product designers “with the common passion for story-telling through experimental design.” If you can dream your perfect world, they can help you make it a reality. Together they’ve designed countless interiors, each one created to achieve an unforgettable experience, much like the Modern Anthology store itself.
