Description:

If you’re looking to recreate that sexy, mud-laden scene from “Ghost” complete with an embrace from Patrick Swayze and “Unchained Melody” as your background music, you may have to tap into some otherworldly channels. Until then, the closest you can get is bringing yourself and your partner to Mud Sweat and Tears Pottery to create your own artisanal love scene as well as some personal, unique beautiful work – and lots of memories.

MST has all you need to experience one of the most romantic dates ever, or to adopt as a sacred alone-time haven for some much-needed breathing room, relaxation, and creative exercising. Especially in crazy NYC, this type of personal replenishment is crucial for survival. In fact it’s known so well for its provisions, MST’s been featured on shows like “Live with Regis and Kelly” and The View. MST is also a popular go-to when it comes to shooting film scenes and commercials.

You may hear of a few pottery studios throughout NYC, but I promise none compares to this one. The ambiance is where it begins with a full-exposure front window allowing natural light to flow into the workspace, retail area, and private gallery where more well-seasoned potters can showcase and sell their masterpieces. The workshop area carries an old school appeal that may be a throwback to your younger, bohemian days when you dreamed of owning a bead shop when you grew up (shhh! that’s still my dream!).

The staff here is as laid-back and patient as they are jumping at the chance to understand your concept and help you make it come to life. The instructors are as unintimidating as their classes. Intro to Potters Wheel is catered to both those with no knowledge of the craft in need of a real 101 course and those who are self-taught but inactive and in need of a soft-core refresher ($225 for 5 weeks). On step up, The Beginner Wheel Class provides more in-depth ideas for new projects for those with a stronger fundamental grasp of the art (10 weeks for $410).

Perhaps the most popular (I have taken it once with my BF and once with my BFF) is the Friday Night Out class which is more like a venue for sipping some good wine and letting your inner decorative arts major come out to play. The course is a quite structured one led by some of the studio’s expert instructors in an otherwise laid-back, social setting. It offers a superb substitute to the wild NYC bar scene. MST provides snacks, soda and an invitation to BYOB. I don’t know about you, but the idea of enjoying a fine Pinot with license to run rampant in what Willy Wonka’s factory may have looked if artisanal paper and supplies were his forte, sounds like heaven to me. The course is held every Friday from 7 – 10 PM and costs $30 a pop, and because it is their most popular, I encourage you to register well ahead of time because spots are snatched up quickly.

Drop-ins are welcome and the space is also available for rental. If you haven’t already, head to Mud Sweat & Tears for an experience to unbridle your inner potter, create a personal piece of artwork that you will treasure forever (provided you don’t break it during a Friday Night Out class) – and make some lasting friends and memories.
