Neighborhood: Williamsburg
Type of Place: Pets

Description:
There are lots of lovely pet-supply shops in NYC, reflecting our
city-wide
adoration for the non-human members of our tribes. But Williamsburg's
recently opened Muddy Paws addresses another city-wide fact of life,
tight
space, by providing the room and accessories needed for customers to
give
their dogs an on-site bath.

Seriously--they've got a huge shower stall/bathing space in the back of
the
store, and they supply shampoo, conditioner, towels, and a dryer. We
haven't
yet seen anyone lathering Fluffy or Max back there, so we can't say for
sure
how it works, but it seems to us that you could either choose to stay
relatively dry--there's enough room to avoid the spray--or opt to bathe
along with your canine companion. Bathing rate is $15 for smaller dogs,
$20
for larger breeds.

Beyond this, there's healthy pet food and snacks and a good assortment
of
cute toys and accessories. We liked the "Tender Touch" puppy and kitten
brush, $8, and admired the varied raw hide chews, from $2.50. While we
were
there, a customer was buying turkey patties and biscuits, 75 cents
each, for
her beagle buddy at home.

Muddy Paws is co-owned by Michael, from England, and Yosi, from Israel.
Michael, himself the owner of two large dogs, used to live in the space
the
shop occupies and noticed that his local options were few if he needed
to
grab some pet food on his way home. Thus Muddy Paws is open later than
many
pet-supply shops--till 9 PM. "It seemed like something that was needed
in
the neighborhood," he says; and shoppers seem to agree. Plus, with the
hot
weather coming and your dog perhaps getting a bit sweatier and smellier
than
usual, you've got the perfect place to do the sudsing up and spraying
down.
