Neighborhood: Bay Ridge
Type of Place: Pets

Description:

The last pet I owned was a rabbit. I found him roaming the streets of Bay Ridge around midnight on Third Avenue. He looked worn out, as though he’d been hopping for miles in search of safe harbor amidst the mean streets of Brooklyn and so we named him after one of the roughest parts of the borough: Bushwick. I’ve had pets in the past, but have to say that nursing Bushwick back to health was more expensive than I’d remembered pet care to be. Bushwick has since passed, but I sure wish I’d known about Paws Truly back then: it would have been my go-to, as it goes above and beyond expectations when it comes to service, quality, and pricing. Although I am pet-less now, I come from a family obsessed with shih-tzus and from now on, Paws Truly it will be my go-to for holidays, birthdays, and “just-because” occasions for my canine cousins.

Your ears will perk up when you encounter the service at Paws. Deirdre, the owner, is one of the most genuine and heart-warming people I have come across. She is not only easy to talk to and eager to answer questions, but she is honest, too. Her small shop is teeming with products that are hand-picked to reflect the healthiest, highest-grade quality. I do not think there is one item in this shop that Deirde would not give her own pet including Seamus, the sweetest giant labradoodle you’ll find ready to greet you with a gentle paw-shake or two or three.

Here you’ll find wholesome food products including American-made brands like Blue Buffalo, Merrick, Old Mother Hubbard, Red Barn, Weruya, Robbie Dawg, Nature’s Miracle and more. The prices of these brands are costly across the board, but you will find them to be cheaper here than those found at big, cold, sterile chains like PetSmart and PetCo. Besides necessities, you’ll find an array of goodies like dental chews that range from $1.99 - $3.99, pizza-flavored treats at $4.99/pack, bigger items like a car seat cover to prevent your car’s interior from becoming a pet-hair magnet at $24.99 each, and so much more.

What really gets my tail wagging when it comes to Paws Truly is the way they cater to pet birthdays. You’ll find supplies like hats, balloons, and decorating items - and you can even buy a birthday cake made to order ($23.99 each)! About 8” around, the cakes consist of a yummy, healthy pet-treat batter and is decorated with bone-shaped biscuits around its perimeter. Paws Truly does not make the cakes themselves, rather they are ordered and kept frozen for pick-up. The best part is: humans can eat them. You can either serve your pet-of-honor his own entire cake to gobble down, or give him that legendary lucky first slice and pass the rest around for people-guests to try a nibble.

Paws Truly is not a typical pet supply shop – it is a boutique for pets. Even if you’re not in the market for a dog bone, stop in to say hi to Deirde or pet that gigantically gentle charmer, Seamus.
