Description:

UPDATE: Barry Diller's floating, futuristic park, dubbed, "Little Island," is now slated to open in the Springf of 2021 with the expected cost reportedly closer to $250 million.

Here's our initial report dating back to 2015:

First it was The High Line, now another dream park will soon become reality.   The New York Times  first reporting a lease agreement has been reached for a $170 million dollar futuristic Park off the West Side Highway near 14th Street.   Pier 55, as it is called, is being funded primarily by media mogul Barry Diller and his wife, Diane von Furstenberg.

The floating 2.7 acre park will offer sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline.  The pier, held up by martini-shaped pilings, will also feature wooded and grassy areas, along with a performance space that will serve as a venue for music, dance, theatre and public art.   Pilings from two adjacent piers (Pier 54 and Pier 56) will remain as a habatat for marine life.  Construction of the park is set to begin in 2016.
