Description:
OK, November and December were fairly mild; but most of January and all of February were basically frightful, and most of us could use a dose of spring right about now. So I was pleased to see a very springy and sweet-looking pink dress beckoning from the window of Pinky Otto as I walked along East 9th Street, one of my favorite stretches for shopping in NYC (I've already covered Elaine Arsenault, Dinosaur Hill, and Atomic Passion in this area). I was even more pleased to find, once inside the small-but-cozy boutique, that much of the merchandise now on display is from this past season or last spring--which means that, although it looks absolutely fresh and will carry you beautifully through the coming spring and summer, it's on deep discount nonetheless.

For work, I found an eternally crisp-looking long-sleeved khaki shirtdress, with a brown band at the waist that could be supplemented with a belt of any color, now $104; and a chic, hugely wearable linen jumper in tan with gathered side pockets, now $84.

If you've got a formal event coming up, you're in serious luck here. There's a gorgeous sleeveless chiffon dress in what would best be described, at risk of sounding like a pretentious clothes catalogue, as grape, plum, and taupe, now $124; a tan "Swiss chalet" dress with puff sleeves and black lace, now $124; and a cream chiffon sleeveless dress with embroidered flowers at the hem, now $124.

For more relaxed gatherings, or if your office is not fashion-averse, I loved a red cotton-knit blouse with white-lace applique, now $64; a light pink sundress with white polka dots and lace detail, now $104 (this was the dress I first spotted from the street); and a floral-print sleeveless blouse with sparkly buttons, $54 (this might not be available if I happen to swing back to the shop to pick it up before you do!).

The merchandise I saw from the upcoming spring line is equally adorable, with some of the pieces featuring a "fruit" theme: a cherry-printed cap-sleeve dress with lace detail is $95; a puff-sleeved blouse in blueberry-printed cotton with a cream bodice is also $95.

Pinky Otto opened in September 2005 but has already established itself enough to be planning a second branch, that one slated for Nolita. The current great sale will end in about two weeks--sooner if everything is grabbed up before then; so come and get the grownup version of a spring break while you can.   - Pamela Grossman; March 3, 2007
