Description:
We knew it would happen eventually, and now it has. The mild weather is
gone for the year. No more lounging for hours on lawns; no more cool
drinks at an outdoor table. We've got to wear jackets again; sweaters;
socks. Even with them, we're going to shiver sometimes. OK, let's be
honest: We're gonna freeze our tushies off.

But hey, it isn't all bad news. Here in NYC, we're *supposed* to have
cold weather; without it, we wonder just how quickly this global-warming
thing is moving to mess us up. And fashion-wise, the cooler months can
have their benefits. For every tank top you've got to tuck away,
there's a cozy sweater waiting to be reclaimed.

I thought about this as I walked, shivering slightly (having neglected
to wear socks), down Mott Street in the late afternoon. When I came
across Poppy, I thought, "Aha. A benefit of fall." The autumn line here is
lush, elegant, classic, beautifully cut, and gorgeously colored. It's
enough to make the coming chill quite a lot more appealing.

Though the shop is not large, its great options are many; just about
every item I took off the racks was something I wanted to write about.
For Thanksgiving, through the holidays, and for years to come, these
clothes will take care of you. I loved a loose, snuggly black
cotton/cashmere sweater-dress from Dream Society ($159); a zip-up black cotton jacket
from Rails (casual but with fun, distinctive details, like oversized
buttons; $143); a holiday-perfect gold cotton tunic from Kate and Kass
($165, with the added plus of forgiving, stretchy fabric--a good choice
for big-meal days); a navy cotton blouse from Chrissa (this one will
work through the spring; $165); a terrific sleeveless dress in gold from
Karta, detailed with chunky gold beads--bold but not busy, and a great
choice for parties ($348); a silver blouse from coreylynncalter printed
with birds and flowers (more classically stylish than it might sound,
trust me; $216); and a fantastic dress from Madison Marcus, with a grey
bodice and a metallic silver skirt (think urban ballerina), that had
customers flocking in from the street ($260).

I came into Poppy feeling, already, a bit winter weary; but I left
remembering that the cold doesn't have to be so bad. Thanksgiving and the
winter holidays can be great. There's ice skating. There's a fire in
the fireplace. And who doesn't like big, festive meals to which we can
wear clothes that kindly drape rather than clinging? The choices at Poppy
will knock you out. How obnoxious can the coming months really be if we get
to wear this stuff? Bundle up and enjoy.   - Pamela Grossman; Oct 29, 2007
