Description:
I ducked into Cobble Hill's Rocketship because I was charmed by the festive window display—and wondered what was up these days in the world of comics and graphic novels. The answer is, way more than you might expect; and this is a great place to find a gift for just about anyone on your list or a fun little something for yourself.

The sound system played punk tracks, jazz, and soul as I browsed the selection, continually surprised. Who knew there existed \"Bob Dylan Revisited: 13 Graphic Interpretations of Bob Dylan's Songs" ($24.95) or "Che: A Graphic Biography" ($22, and written by Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón, who also wrote a graphic-book representation of the 9-11 report)? Know a "Buffy" devotee? Grab a graphic-novel version of the series ($15.95), with material that continues where the show left off. The "staff favorite" section offers a graphic-novel interpretation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Predjudice" ($19.99, by Nancy Butler and Hugo Petrus), which drew an enthusiastic "Oh my God!" from a shopper who belongs to a Jane Austen book club. She was charmed by this concept, as was I. Nothing will replace the original Austen, but why not put Jane out there in various loving forms? A look at the novel "Veronica's Passport," based on the Archie series, led me to the recently infamous "Archie Marries Veronica: The Proposal" comic book ($2.50). "Betty's better off anyway," scoffed the shop assistant. "He's not husband material!" Perhaps not; but I had to notice that this installment is labeled "Part One of Six," so there'll be room for new developments before it's all said and done. I had to scoop this up for my friend Paula, who told me she supports the Betty proposal (Paula! Your judgement is usually good!).

From the scary to the arty to the goth-y to the sweet, and including the standard and the obscure, the selection here is truly impressive. And on top of it all, there are t-shirts ($20): Grab one to show your love for the Green Lantern, the X-Men, the Flash, and more. Tis the season to curl up with a blanket and some cider; a selection from Rocketship will only make things cozier.   - Pamela Grossman; Nov 1, 2009
