Description:
Have a craving for hot dogs and cold beer? You don’t have to head out to the ballpark just drop by Rudy’s Bar and Grill. The beer is cheap and the hot dogs are free at this Hell’s Kitchen favorite. The bouncer surprisingly checked our ids as we walked in past the six-foot fiberglass pig propped up outside. An old fashioned red “BAR” sign hangs in the front window and casts a crimson tint over the crowd. The red vinyl booths are ripped up and lovingly patched with masking tape. The floors have a gritty feel underfoot while we walk by the booths lining an exposed brick wall. Low hanging lamps dangle over the crowded bar. An elementary school looking blackboard lists about 12 beers on tap. Most bottles and pints are only $3-$4 and pitchers are a good deal at $9. Rudy's Red is the cheap, house brew (under $3 a pint) but isn’t favored by some who complain it is too weak. The outside patio offers a breath of fresh air with a stone lined backyard decorated with Christmas lights around the perimeter. Sticking with the theme a large slightly scary picture of a pig is displayed on the back brick wall. Standing room in the “garden” area is tight. Regulars know to try to snag a table early on in the night. This hot dog dive definitely delivers a hazy night of drinks without breaking the bank. Those on a budget will rejoice in a city where a bottle of beer can cost as much as a six pack at the deli. Cheers! - Jennifer Voit
