Description:
As the winter coats (finally) come off, you're seeing these women
around the city. Can their style really be as effortless as it appears?
Their outfits have a sly sense of humor. Their dresses are feminine
without being overtly formal, their separates wearable but always
distinctive. Not for them any blown-dry, press-seamed fashions; these
girls can't be bothered. They've got what we'll call Lower East Side
Chic, and chances are, they know about a great shop called Shop.

Area resident Lydia Burd's energetic corner spot is stocked with
pieces
from predominantly New York– and Los Angeles–based designers
and boasts a witty, confident, utterly unfussy appeal. We loved
everything we saw from a line called Mandate of Heaven
(from $200), vintage items that have been reconceived in modern cuts.
(We weren't alone in our admiration; a tutu-inspired MoH dress in the
window pulled in five separate, inquiring passersby in the half hour we
were around.) Or how about the red-and-white candy-stripe camisole
with metallic gold accents by Ella Moss ($66), or the swingy, sexy grey
jersey dress with sash-tie sleeves by Bianca Branaman ($111)?
Accessories-wise, we fell for the purse made from pink vintage T-shirts
by Corpus Delecti ($90); the metallic green sandals with cork wedges
by Farylrobin ($125); and the brass enamel bangles in solid pink,
black, white, or purple ($19).

Think Charlie's Angels if they finally decided to stop listening to
Charlie;
think the Go-Go's crossed with Joan Jett and a touch of Bjork; think
the
members of Le Tigre mixing together all their clothes. "Do you think
you
can do whatever you want?" these clothes ask. "Well—you're right."
