After a day of shopping or a night of theater, you may want to wind down with a martini. The Back Martini Lounge, in the rear of 44 Southwest, a popular and quite affordable Italian restaurant, you'll find the lounge area. It's a romantic room with small tables and a friendly bar.
You'll find about a dozen martini varieties on the menu. You can have it "dry" or "dirty" as our bartender, April, said with somewhat of a sneer. She's quite a character. You can tell she's really an actress trying to make ends meet between gigs, just a very theatrical and wonderful person.
April made me a Bellini. The lounge's version is made with Absolut, Madeira, orange juice and topped off with champagne in a perfectly chilled martini glass. It was yummy, although the wide-rimmed glass with its off-centered stem gave new meaning to the word tipsy! I was also a little tipsy by the time I was through. - Sam Sayegh
