Neighborhood: Chelsea
Type of Place: Antiques/Crafts

Description:
Usually you have to travel outside the city to
find a quilt shop. But not anymore.

Cathy Izzo, a former TV Producer, came up with idea to create a shop where city dwellers could design and make their own quilts, either by hand or machine.

Izzo says people who like to work with their hands are drawn to the shop, as well as individuals tired of working on a computer who are looking for something a bit more creative.

The shop is filled with patterns, books and fabrics you'll need to get started. Most of the fabrics come from the U-S and Japan, including some hand-died batiks. Izzo says they're not especially traditional. Instead the focus is on brighter, sophisticated materials that offer a more urban look.

The City Quilter offers a starter course for $40, as well as an 8-week course for $140 which allows you to walk away with a completed quilt.
