Description:

On a strangely cold and blustery but also impressively dramatic afternoon (rain! sun! wind! hail?), I blew into a shop that seemed to promise elegant shelter. I did not know at this point that the clothing line here, called Vince, started in L.A. and came to this coast a few years ago; or that celebs like Kate Hudson, Matthew McConnaughey, and Cate Blanchett are fans. I just knew it looked chic and unpretentious and had a good sale going on.

I loved the classic, clean-lined styles here, and yes, there were some fabulous items on sale. For women, I admired a light-wool-blend sweater with a wide neck in royal blue or ivory (40% off $175); a long-sleeved grey t-shirt with thin blue stripes (also available in blue with grey stripes, and marked "super cute" in my notes), 40% off $115; a lightweight, semi-sheer long-sleeved t-shirt in ivory, lavender, or black (I apparently missed the price, but similar to the striped shirts); and skinny jeans in taupe, mint green, beige, or black (40% off $220). There were also some great shoes on sale—my personal favorites were cobalt suede flats (40% off $150).

In the non-sale items, I also found lots to like and prices that were fair. For instance: an orange linen-blend sweater with white stripes, $195 (also in light brown with white stripes); a fitted t-shirt in grey with navy sides and sleeves that looked like it would be very slimming ($68); and soft, cap-sleeved t-shirts in olive, orange, or white, $60.

On the men's side, I loved a grey-and-white-striped sweater for $165 (also available in very cute cobalt and white), $165; and a short-sleeved plaid shirt in what I wrote as "yellow, blue, green, purple, and...!"—apparently I was too busy writing colors to write the price, but it was reasonable. (Tip to gals: Check out the men's things too. Seriously, that cobalt-and-white sweater would look good on anyone.)

Outside, it had stopped pouring, so I said goodbye to the staff at Vince and headed to the street. But I'd love to come back as a shopper for these well-made items and a fun take on unflappably classic designs.
