Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Type of Place: Parks

Description:
Washington Square Park was created in the 1820s. It was built on land that once served as a potter's field and public gallows.

The centerpiece of the park is the Washington Square Arch.
It's not exactly the Arc di Triomphe, but it is the closest thing you'll find in New York City.
Nearly $3 million dollars was spent renovating the arch, restoring it to its original glory. And the city isn't done yet. It plans to spend another $3.5 million renovating the entire park, which could use a facelift.

The arch itself, a tribute to George Washington, is engraved with a quote by the nation's first president from the Constitutional Convention in 1787. It reads, "Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair. The event is in the hand of God."

Park ammenities include a cooling fountain, dog run and chess tables.
