Neighborhood: Flatiron District
Type of Place: Kitchen Supplies
If there is a kitchen in heaven, I bet it looks just like Whisk. Epicureans who don’t know about this little gem of a culinary supply shop are advised to rip off their aprons and head to Bedford Avenue now (or you can head to the Flatiron district since they just opened a sister shop there).
From cooking staples to quirky items, from Le Creuset to Kitchenaid and OXO, Whisk has every ingredient needed for a more-than-palatable kitchen supply shop. A nice complement to the cheese shop right across the street, this store really does stock everything. You’ll find a porcelain creamer in the shape of a rabbit for $3, dishtowels seasoned with a blueprint of the Brooklyn Bridge ($14.00), and onion goggles ($20). There are practical items galore, too, like a Cuisinart ice cream maker (well, to me that’s practical) for a hundred bucks, cookie cutters at a buck a piece and a nice collections of hanging baskets ranging from $10 - $30.
Salad spinners, mortar and pestles, colanders, cookbooks, cutlery, picnic-wear, prepware, barware, gadgets for brewing your own tea, coffee or beer…whatever kitchen doo-dad you’re looking for, Whisk has it – and then some. If you have questions, don’t shy from the staff. They are more than eager to address any of your concerns without hovering annoyingly, and I have always found them impressively knowledgeable in the culinary arts.
Whisk is not a huge store, in fact it’s rather cute and intimate, but it is incredible inviting thanks to the store’s warm energy and posters of Julia Child hanging up all over the place. Don’t let the size fool you, either. They’ve crammed more into this little bundt cake of a shop than you could imagine with prices that are comparable to if not better to than those you will find at other kitchen supply shops as well as Amazon.
You’ll definitely feel whisked away into a cook’s paradise here. Even if you’re not in the market for a kitchen gadget, browsing is not frowned upon at Whisk, making it a delicious place to indulge yourself. I definitely encourage you to sample one of the culinary world’s most tasty treats.
