Yumi Kim
Neighborhood: Lower East Side
Type of Place: Women's Clothing
Description:
Okay, so you’re not going to find bargain-basement prices at Yumi Kim. But sometimes (and I know you agree with me), an occasional indulgence can be the key to sanity – particularly in an economically-stifled world where buying outside of your budget can feel almost criminal. I am here to give you the green light. Go ahead and splurge on silk– and do it at Yumi Kim.
I cannot express to you how much I adore the dresses at this Lower East Side boutique. I am not typically drawn to bright and flirty prints, but there is something about the Kim’s line that is so refreshing, I can’t help but feel a wave of relaxation rush through me whenever I step into the store’s dressing room. Nor can I resist a purchase now and then, such as my latest a traditional “tulip” skirt (detailed with asymmetrical pleats, a wrap at the front and a zipper at the back for $139.00).
The articles you’ll find at Kim’s are reminiscent of an island getaway – flowery, sunshiny, light, and airy. And to boot, the store offers a substantial petite selection which is, surprisingly to some, a rare commodity in New York City. I should note another plus here: that even the smaller sizes at Kim’s are sometimes wearable by curvier women because of how flowy they are.
In addition to dresses, you’ll find rompers, jumpers, bottoms and more. Costs can range from anywhere from $69 for a flowery, v-neck, button-down blouse made of crepe de chine silk, to a simple sleeveless black dress embellished with black beads for $250. The last time I visited, I spotted a couple of tanks for $139 and while my first thought was “What the…?”, as soon as I felt the material (oh yeah….100% silk), I understood the value. There is also a decent sale section at Kim’s, so don’t despair if you can’t dish out for a new piece. Bonus: I found the older items to be in as good of shape as the newer items, so it is totally worth checking out.
Not only is Yumi Kim an up-and-coming designer – she’s a real pleasure to work with. You’d be silly not to check out this swanky, silk-laden boutique. I pretty much vow you won’t find a clothing line as unique, revitalizing and of comparable quality elsewhere in the city – unless you are prepared to spend thousands.
