Spring! The relatively chilly temperatures so far this season have me, and perhaps you, all the more eager for garden blossoms, sunshine, and warm, relaxed afternoons. And so the windows of Yumi Kim immediately caught my eye—stocked with candy-colored warm-weather dresses and separates that looked like big fun. The pop music spilling out the door cemented my decision to check things out.
Yumi Kim is named for designer Kim Phan (Yumi is her cherished Yorkie). She has a shop on the Lower East Side as well as the one that I discovered uptown. And I am now a firm admirer of her work and the spirit behind it.
First things first—because the season is turning, I was lucky and happy to find a favorite eager-shopper discovery: the sale rack. And this one is really, really good. Brights and some pastels were popular this past fall and winter, and so the silk and silk-blend items on sale here now will most certainly serve you well this spring and even into the summer. I loved a long-sleeved pale pink top ($70, was $139); a sleeveless shell top in a color I wrote down as "neon avocado" ($95. was $135); a dress in the same color ($97, was $193); a long-sleeved teal tunic ($99, was $198); and various floral-print items for similar prices (florals are a Yumi Kim staple).
The rest of the shop was just as attractive. I was happily drawn to an off-white sun dress with a blue, yellow, and orange Jackson Pollack–like sun dress ($203); a silky violet tunic ($150); ballet flats in various fun shades and patterns ($55); and lots of charming jewelry, such as wire earrings with jade beads ($45).
I kept envisioning city girls relaxing in a park with their best friends or romantic partners (or best friends who might become romantic partners?) and wearing these clothes. What more do you need for a great afternoon than a blanket, a buddy, a killer outfit, and a journal (lovely printed journals here for $12)? And if your travels take you beyond a city park, there are cute neon passport holders here too ($30).
For home, I loved the soaps in "postcard"-print boxes ($15 and with yummy scents) and candles ($12 and delish).
