Type of Place: Antiques/Crafts

Description:
Leave the buying and stretching of canvas to other painters;
for Antony Zito there's no need, because he's got a piece of a refrigerator. Or a scratched-up 78 record, or a remnant of a car bumper, or a silver-plated dish with some dents. On found objects, discovered by Zito or brought into his gallery by his customers, he creates paintings whose inherent beauty is
enhanced by, and often tied to, the objects' shape and origin.

Smaller paintings start at $30 and currently include the
above-mentioned, and very lovely, portrait of a girl rendered on a fragment of a refrigerator door. Paintings on antique sheet-music pages are also $30, or 2 for $50. Commissioned paintings start at $150 for a watercolor, and an amazing
series of painted album covers (currently on exhibit in California but headed back to this coast soon) starts at around $200. Signed color prints of Zito's originals are available too, for $10.

The gallery opened 2 1/2 years ago, though Zito has been working as an artist, in addition to painting, he does metal work (one-of-a-kind candle holders and lamps start at $75), for far longer. "It took me 10 years to get to this space," he explains. But recently he¹s gotten a good amount of
high-profile recognition; director Jim Jarmusch, for instance, chose to feature a Zito portrait in his latest film, "Coffee and Cigarettes."

As a gesture of solidarity with and appreciation for the other artists on the Lower East Side, Zito is heading up an "art loop" tour of galleries in the area on the last Sunday of this month and next (July 25th and August 29, from 1-7 P.M.). A guided tour meets at the Lower East Side Visitor Information Center (261 Broome St., between Orchard and Allen) at 1, for a suggested donation; unguided tours are free and can be planned via an annotated map available at Zito.
