New York boasts a number of good Korean barbecues, but it will be difficult to find one as stylish as 36 Bar and Barbecue. Stainless steel tables line the restaurant, each complete with its own mini barbecue pit. You'll watch in wonder as smoldering embers are brought to your table (but watch your feet, sometimes they stray). Then comes the fun part. The grilling. You can either do it yourself or your friendly hostess will be glad to do it for you. From the angus beef to the jumbo tiger shrimps, you'll savor the natural flavors of the food or wrap each succulent piece in a lettuce leaf with a red pepper sauce. We only had trouble with the scallops which seemed to get stuck to the grill. But the flavor more than made up for any mess. While most entrees are under $20, if you're not careful you could ring up quite a bill as you keep the grill going. It's also a great place for cocktails. An upstairs bar serves up drinks made with soju, a sour rice liquor similar to sake. Drinks are conjured up with names like "Twinkie" and "Red Devil" or enjoy a soju martini. 36 bar and Barbecue is not only good eating, it's fun and makes for a great time out with friends!
