Cititour Review:

As one walks through East 7th St. at the corner of 1st Avenue, it is always a marvel how many people line up outside an espresso bar that is smaller than the bathroom of Starbucks. And yet, a sip of their iced coffee or latte will answer that question. Abraço (“embrace” in Portuguese) is definitely one of the best coffee shops in New York, both for enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Just a hole-in-the-wall, Abraço’s coffee is individually brewed straight into your cup. It serves made-to-order drip coffee, cafe cortado, and other latte-based drinks. A word of caution to the soy milk drinkers and Splendaholics: Abraco only gives whole milk and brown sugar. Yet this lack of variety only makes this closet-sized space seem more gourmet.

Owners Jamie McCormick (from the Bay Area’s Blue Bottle Coffee, Inc.) and Elizabeth Quijada show that simplicity (and great beans) is key to success. The shop is known for great food as well, such as their signature olive oil cake, cookies and – surprise -- frittata. Small savory prix-fixe plates are also available beginning noon.

Abraço is closed on Mondays. Visit their website at www.abraconyc.com
