Aleli is offering a fresh new take on authentic Mexican cuisine in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The space is beautifully designed with a full bar, tiled floor and colorful mural. But it is the fine food that one should really take notice of. The Spice Guacamole takes the traditional avocado dish to new levels with Mexican herbs, Manzano chiles and toasted pumpkin seeds. An Octopus Tostada arrives piled high with thinly-sliced octopus with salsa macha, radish, tomato and avocado on a crispy tortilla. Shrimp Aguachile is another vibrant dish that is similar to ceviche. The shrimps are served in a vibrant green sauce made with chiles and cilantro. Bits of cucumber give the dish added crunch. Also on the menu, assorted tacos with each getting a distinct sauce. Steak is served with purslane, a leafy succulent, and chile de arbol sauce. Fried fish is matched up with a spicy habernaro sauce while the lamb taco is topped with a sauce made from Morita chiles and pungent greens called papalo. Each is wonderful. Larger plates include Steak ala Mexicana with potatoes, huazontles, poblana rajas and morita sauce; Short Ribs with Guashmole made with "guaja" seeds; Green Chicken Enchiladas with pipián verde and queso fresco; and a Grilled Pork Chop with green beans, purslane, and Mole de Queretaro. For dessert there is a traditional flan with berries and coconut, and Mexican coffee from Chiapas. A visit to Aleli is like taking a trip to Mexico that one should not miss. >>
