One foot into Artisanal and you know youReview By: Benny Prim
are entering someplace special. With it's high ceilings, cushioned banquettes and wood trim, the restaurant offers an appearance of hushed elegance. But the high decibal level from the lively crowd tells a different story.
Armed with an arsenal of 200 different cheeses, and a fantastic wine list, Artisanal has made a name for itself from its instantly famous fondues to its macaroni and cheese. And that's what really makes the restaurant stand out. It's a place where ordinary folks
get a chance to hobnob with the highbrow
and it works.
My visit took me to the bar for some
wine tasting and a midday snack. Jimmy, a friendly chap tending bar, steered me to a glass of Pouilly Fuisse chardonnay and a cheesesteak, which turned out to be a great pick. Tender pieces of steak served on a toasted baguette smothered in fresh cheddar and grilled onions would make the folks in Philly proud.
Artisanal can be a bit pricey. I dropped $35 at lunch. But what the heck, you only live once.
