New York is not just the melting pot of all cultures but with them, all cuisines. Cheeky's, in its own inimitable way, brings to light just what a mish mash our lovely city is. Itself straddling an odd part of Manhattan - just north of Chinatown and south of SoHo - the menu offers such southern staples as a chicken biscuit (pictured) topped with purple cabbage slaw, staining the biscuit bright purple, and that luscious country gravy not particularly known in NYC. A crisp, freshly fried chicken cutlet sits in that sandwich, and brings to mind such delights as "why can't more places make chicken sandwiches like this?" and "goodness I am glad this is not next to a subway or I'd visit everyday and grow to 300 pounds".
Also not to be missed, though, are the shrimp po'boy, complete with pickly remoulade, and then the beignets. The closest to Cafe du Monde that this city has to offer, you'd be a fool to miss the happily chewy fried balls of dough covered in enough powdered sugar to make a Colombian drug lord jealous. At 3/$1, they're a bargain - consider them a trip to New Orleans.
