Cititour Review:

Buried deep in busy bustling Chinatown is a store that stands unique among the cheap souvenir shops and markets. The Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is well-known among locals and tourists alike as one of the district’s oldest businesses. Stop by for ice cream cones, sorbet, sundaes, milkshakes and ice cream cakes.

Among their bestselling flavours are, predictably enough, lychee and almond cookie. But what is a surprise is that these contain actual lychee fruit and almond cookie. It’s funny how their “regular” flavours include avocado, durian, green tea, red bean zen butter and wasabi, while their “exotic” flavours are the ones most of us are probably more familiar with, such as chocolate, mocha chip , strawberry and vanilla. The price is a bit steep—I got two scoops in a cup for $6.50, but I assure you, it is worth the price and the trip.

Service-wise, the people are always efficient and ready to give recommendations if you need it. It’s still a family-run operation, and the walls show years of the Factory being a part of the Chinatown community. I particularly love the Chinese lanterns that look like ice cream cones, and how American pop music beats in the background. It’s truly a gustatory experience that you can find only in New York City.
