Crab on Ninth is not exactly what you would expect from a crab shack with its bright pink vertical stripes and funky salmon colored banquettes. But if seafood is what you crave this is the place. The menu features trendy dishes like Lobster Mac 'n Cheese ($12), Lobster Quesadillas ($12) and a personal favorite, Crab Cakes ($16) served with a spicy remoulade. Dig a little deeper, and a lobster roll ($17) could be yours. It’s served on a toasted potato bread bun with butter and mayo, or better yet have it topped with some smoked bacon ($18). There is also clam chowder ($6), which you can add spicy sausage to, and Lobster Bisque ($10). I was drawn in by the crab beignets. Get six for $8 or ten for $10. I recommend the latter once you take a bite out of one of these delightful crab puffs. They’re crunchy on the outside with bits of soft crab meat on the inside. They are perfect for dipping into the two sauces provided; a spicy pink mayo, and a sweet chili sauce which gives them a more oriental flair. Claw is a tiny storefront on Ninth Avenue. It specializes in fresh Maine lobster, serving it as various iterations, including its most famous one, the lobster roll. Casual and cheerful, it is comfortable and a perfect spot of a leisurely lunch.
Lobster Bisque is more of a chowder than a traditional bisque, but is nonetheless excellent. Claw only uses fresh Maine lobster that is never frozen, and the taste comes through in its bisque. Creamy and smooth, but not thick or sludgy, this manages to be rich without being overpowering or too heavy.
The Lobster Roll features a generously toasted hot dog bun, crisp with butter. It holds sweet steamed lobster meat, bound only with a bit of creamy mayonnaise and tossed with a good amount of salt, to bring out the lobster's natural salinity. It comes with crispy fries, tart cornichons, and a particularly rich homemade mayonnaise.
The prices are a little high for this part of town, and the service is too slow to consider it a weekday lunch. But it offers delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere, and is one of a kind in this part of town.
