Dotory is a funky spot on Broadway in South Williamsburg serving fabulous Korean food. The place is on the smallish side with wooden counters up front, a lively cocktail bar and additional table seating in the back of the restaurant. It is decorated with festive paper lanterns, a cat with a flickering candle in its mouth and a Buddha's head. The crowd is just as eclectic.
Cocktails come with names Spicy Moon, Yogi Bear and Bloody Soonyi. Several types of house-infused soju are offered like Copenhagen Blues made with cucumber and dill. It's mild, yet powerful and sold by the shot or glass.
Small plates like Bao Buns are filled with thick chunks of savory pork belly on a steamed rice bun. Each is topped with crunchy cucumber, jicama, pickled radish, carrot, fried onions and fresh basil. They are heaven in a bun, and at seven bucks for two, the makings of a cheap delicious meal. Other dishes include pan-fried dumplings made in-house and nori tacos with black sesame tofu in fried seaweed shells with a pomegranate kimchi vinaigrette.
Larger plates include traditional Bibimbap, a sizzling mix of rice and veggies, served in a stone pot with kimchi and fried egg. Other toppings include spicy pork, bulgogi meatballs and crispy anchovies. An assortment of soups and stews are available along with scallion pancakes and sandwiches. We tried the Seoul sandwich made with sweet and spicy goehujang marinated pork. It's served on a crispy baguette and wonderfully spicy. The Fat Rodney sandwich is filled with pork belly, while the Manila gets stuffed with Filipino-style pulled chicken adobo. Look to spend about ten bucks for each.
Bread pudding and Blue Marble Ice Cream is available for dessert. There really is nothing not to like at Dotory, including the friendly service, as long as you don't mind the rustle of a passing a M or J train.
