Cititour Review:

El Colmado Butchery in the Meatpacking District is the perfect spot for a quick bite or a full blown meal.  Chef Seamus Mullen has done a wonderful job creating a welcoming spot with wide wood plank floors, butcher block counters and tiled walls.   Best of all, it's comforting without being pretentious.

The food at El Colmado also shines.  We started with the Ensalada Invierno. It's a blend of black and red radish sliced paper thin with kohlrabbi, brussels sprouts, and crunchy slices of cured lemon in an anchovy vinaigrette.  The salad is dusted with a layer of Mahón cheese, which gets its name from an island port off the coast of Spain.  It is stunningly good.

Don't pass up on the burger either.  The patty made from a house blend of beef is superb served atop a toasted bun with melted cheese and thick slices of smokey bacon.  I actually found myself moaning with delight after each bite.  The side of shoestring fries, while fun, are a little too thin for my liking, but did have a nice crunch.   Pickled cucumbers and jalapenos give the dish some welcome heat.

There are lots of other goodies to be had, like smoked deviled eggs, octopus with marinated potatoes, and beef & pork meatballs served with sheep's mik yogurt.   Spit-roasted chicken is sold by the half or whole.  A pork chop and costillas (ribs) are sold for $3 an ounce, add a buck more if you're looking for lamb chops.  All of the cuts are prepared a la plancha and served with butcher's choice of vegetable and salsa verde.

The restaurant also has Spanish beer, homemade sangria, along with a lenghty wine list available by the glass, pitcher or bottle.   El Colmado means "the grocer" in Spanish.  This is one place where you are going to want to shop.  Well done!
