From the people who brought New Yorkers dell'anima, L'Artusi and Anfora comes new American restaurant Ellabess in the also brand new Nolitan Hotel – so new, in fact, that the restaurant opened several weeks before the Nolitan took in its first guests.
“Market fresh” is the current restaurant buzzword, and Ellabess doesn't disappoint, with mains that incorporate fresh, local ingredients in a “New Age American” style. Chef Troy Unruh of dell'anima has placed most of the emphasis on seafood, with appetizers like peekytoe crab salad with squash and uni butter (14) and mains like red snapper with littleneck clams and cranberry beans (28) or shrimp alla plancha with grits and fried strips of okra (24). The restaurant's specialty, however, according to first reviews, is the fried chicken breast (22), served this summer with Asian-inspired watermelon pickle, and recently updated to include a potato purée with Burgundy truffle.
The restaurant itself seats 70 and features windows as opposed to walls, allowing both natural light and the spirit of the Nolita neighborhood to become a part of the restaurant. While the food has generally received glowing reviews, a handful of dishes have been hit-or-miss, and the staff took a few weeks to get used to an apparently awkward dining room setup. Now, it seems the ambiance problems have been ironed out. Perhaps Ellabess just needed some time to get settled into her new home.
