The Essex Market now has a vibrant space at 88 Essex Street. Located just steps from its original location, the new Essex Market is celebrating its heritage while looking to the future. The space, which houses 21 vendors, includes some newcomers and longtime favorites. Nordic Preserves features an array of smoked fish and herrings. There are meatballs stuffed with quinoa and spinach at Mille Nonne. Khap Man Gai, or Eat Gai, is bringing the flavors of Hainanese chicken. It's deep fried with shallots and served with pickled cucumbers and a sweet-and-spicy sauce. At Don Ceviche, they are doing shrimp, octopus and mixed ceviches that offer plenty of heat served. There are served with traditional choclo (large Peruvian corn), toasted corn nuts and sweet potato. There's a large assortment of cheeses at Formaggio Essex, and vegan cheeses (which taste like the real deal) at Riverdel which is aging some of them in-house. We counted at least two meat purveyors with all sorts of cuts at reasonable prices.  Porto Rico Coffee has an outpost where you can buy it by the cup or by the pound. There are a few bakeries, including Davidowich, and colorful flowers by Saffron. There's even an on-site barber. While visiting we ran into the folks running Roni-Sue's Chocolates who gave us a taste of their 65% cocoa chocolate, being cooked on the spot, which is delicious, as are the chocolates. The shop is making a return to Essex Market after a six year absence. Owner Rhonda Kave said the new space managed to capture the spirit of the old Essex Market, something that is not easy to duplicate. >>
