Friend House refers to itself as an "Asian Bistro," and indeed this stylish yet comfortable East Village spot is definitely not your average neighborhood Chinese restaurant. In part, that's because about one-third of the menu is devoted to sushi and sashimi. Another factor is that the restaurant lives up to its odd name, offering extremely friendly service. Few places I've tried willingly agreed – nay suggested – frying half of the mixed dumpling platter and steaming the other half, so that all the flavors (shrimp, chicken, pork and vegetable) received the most favorable treatment. The food itself is also a cut above the corner joint: Hot-and-Sour soup can be wonderfully bracing; Scallion Pancakes are properly crispy; fried dishes like General Tso's Chicken and Sesame Prawns boast lighter-than-normal breading and a generous serving of broccoli, while more health-conscious options like Chicken with Fresh Spinach prove to be both tasty and good for you. Better still, all of this comes at neighborhood-friendly prices – even the deluxe sushi and sashimi dinner for two comes in at only $35. Very friendly indeed.
