Cititour Review:

What do you get when you cross a sushi bar with a nightclub?   Fushimi of course, with locations on Staten Island and Brooklyn.  We were greeted by a giant Buddha as we entered one of the locations in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  The restaurant itself has a reddish glow with crystal chandeliers and images of Asian beauties throughtout.  The subtle, sexy nature of this place is the key selling point.

Cocktails come with names like "Pink Bubbly" and "Bloody Mai Tai" with matching Manhattan prices.  There are martinis in flavors like Lychee, Passionfruit and Electric Blue, made with Blue Curacao.  Plum wine runs $30 a bottle.

We started our meal with with some tasty rolls; Spicy Yellowtail, California and the Angry Dragon made with shrimp tempura, king crab and avocado.   There were slices of yellowtail served ceviche-style with jalapenos in a yuzu truffle soy vinaigrette. Crispy rings of calamari got some help from a mango dipping sauce, and the spring rolls provided a nice crunch.

The Teriyaki with wild sea shrimp was a nice choice.  The shrimps were plump and juicy.  The Surf & Turf was a hit and miss.  The filet mignon was grilled to perfection atop a bed of sauteed shiitake, shimeji and oyster mushrooms.  But the portion is small.  The half lobster was a bit overdone, maybe because of its size.  Two bites and it was gone. The $27 bill remained.

It's not often that I've left a $200+ meal for three feeling hungry.  But that's what happened at Fushimi, which turns out to be more flash than substance.
