Cititour Review:
One of my favorite places to hang out and meet up with friends is the GMT Tavern at the corner of Bleecker Street and LaGuardia Place. What makes this British style pub such a welcoming spot? Well for starters it’s in a great location and the lively atmosphere itself is just so inviting. Flags from around the world hang above the outside awnings and café tables spill onto the sidewalk. Inside the décor is down to earth with dark wooden communal tables to chat up the person sitting next to you. It’s the kind of place anyone would feel comfortable. I’ve been here with friends and had a great time, but I’ve also stopped in alone, sat at the bar, and carried on conversations with tourists, locals, and even a retired brain surgeon and his wife in town from the burbs for the day.
The food here isn’t too shabby either. Of course they have traditional fare like scotch eggs and fish and chips, but mostly it’s just American food. Small plates like crabcakes, onion soup with gruyere, and goat cheese fritters are among my favorites. And for entrees I love the Meantime Burger, made with Kobe beef, stilton blue, sautéed red onions, and watercress on a brioche. The oven roasted salmon isn’t have bad either. But honestly, you really can’t go wrong with much of what’s on the menu, including an impressive selection of local and imported draughts and bottled beers, wines, cocktails, infusions, and whiskeys.
GMT Tavern is open daily for lunch and dinner and on Sundays they serve up a traditional British roast for brunch. If you’re in the neighborhood stop in and stay a while.
