Who would have thought eating your grains could be so hip. At the Grain Bar at the Great Northern Food Hall in Grand Central you will find people lining up to eat a bowl of porridge or "grod" as it's known to the Danish. And with good reason. It's healthy and a small bowl of these Nordic heritage grains, which are now being cultivated in the U.S., is also quite filling. The Grain Bar is serving up both savory and sweet porridges. There's a vegetarian variety and another made with shrimp. We tried the beef version. Stick your fork through some wild greens, some of which I never encountered before, and past the truffle shavings and you will find a soft pile of earthy grains. Dig a little deeper and you might turn up a turnip, carrot, fried onion or cube of beef. There were also hints of thyme and other herbs. I actually found myself devouring what turned out to be a very complex meal that is surprisingly delicious. Yes, I am officially a grain believer. If porridge doesn't rock your boat, the Grain Bar also has an extensive list of craft beers. Grab a seat at the bar or find a table in the nearby food hall. The chef will even personally deliver it to you.
