Cititour Review:
I love Chinese food just about as much as Japanese food. Alright, I pretty much like all food. But put the two together and count me in. That's what you'll find at Hibachi Dumpling near Bryant Park.
It kinda has the look of a 99-cent pizza joint (maybe because it was). It also offers rock bottom prices for the area. The set-up is nothing special, just a few booths and a long stainless steel counter, along with a picture of a smiling dumpling guy giving the thumbs up. During the day food is served buffet style to speed things up, but at night you can order a la carte.
On the Hibachi side there are dishes like beef and shrimps in a brown sauce over rice and broccoli. I thought the shrimps looked a little on the scrawny side, but I was here for the dumplings.
At $1.99 for four, I really wasn't expecting very much. So, I was pleasantly surprised when they were pulled fresh from the grill and tasted wonderful. Each dumpling lightly browned on the bottom and gently steamed on top. The inside filled with juicy pork and green onion. The first bite delivers a burst of juices. Add in a little soy sauce and sriracha for dipping and I was in dumpling heaven. Four was not enough. You may want to double up.
Hibachi Dumpling may not be my go-to spot for dumplings, but if you need a quick fix, and can't get to Chinatown, this is a welcome alternative.
