Cititour Review:

There are restaurants that follow the crowd. And then there are those that lead the pack. Hope & Anchor lives up to its name, providing hope for a community that could use some, while serving as an anchor for others to follow. The restaurant's located in the heart of Red Hook, a part of Brooklyn far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, but an area with great potential, with its cobblestone streets and historic factory buildings. Having worked in one of those factories many years ago, I remember sitting on an abandoned pier wondering why it was so neglected with its breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan. Well, finally people are taking notice. New restaurants and clubs are popping up, parks are being cleaned up, factories are being turned into artists' lofts and there are even plans for a Starbucks. Now, the area still has a long way to go, but Hope & Anchor is providing some promise. The restaurant draws a hip, artsy crowd with a busy bar up front. Friendly waitresses deliver oversized portions of what most would consider greasy spoon cuisine. We went for the char-broiled burgers which lived up to expectations. You'll also find chicken pot pie, clam cakes and loin of pork. Prices are relatively inexpensive and breakfast is served all day. Hope and Anchor is a pioneer. We hope they succeed!
