Since it’s opening, The Tin Building by Jean-Georges has been a magnet for tourists and New Yorkers alike. The immaculate space houses six restaurants new restaurants, but none is more intriguing than the secretive House of the Red Pearl, Jean-Georges interpretation of classic Chinese fare.

To find it, look for the Mercantile shop on the second floor. On the left side is a red fan above emerald green curtains. This is the entrance. Walk through them and you will find a small bar finished with black stone next to an amazing dining room with a large red mural featuring Chinese landscapes, lush green banquettes and dozens of lanterns dangling from the ceiling. It is simple yet elegant. To the side is a private dining room that seats about eight partially hidden behind a series of wooden slats.

The experience begins with an Asian inspired cocktail like the Raspberry Lychee Bellini, or Rye Tai, tiki-style drink made with Old Overholt Rye, Bacardi 8 Rum, orgeat syrup & lime. A refreshing Yuzu Drop is a mix of Grey Goose Vodka, Cointreau, yuzu and lemongrass. There is also an interesting selection of sake, beer, wine and Tin Building sodas in flavors like Lemon Thyme, Cherry Yuzu and Passion Fruit Chili.

The menu is built for sharing. Appetizers include Pork and Shrimp Wontons in fragrant chili oil, Juicy Chicken Potstickers, Shrimp and Cabbage Spring Rolls served with a spicy apricot-ginger mustard, Steamed Eggplant with scallion garlic marinade and Tomato Egg Drop Soup. There’s also Summer Corn Fried Rice topped with a crispy fried egg, and Stir Fried Pea shoots with crispy shallots.

Other offerings include Soy Glazed Duck Breast and Confit Leg served with steamed buns, seasonal pickles and hoisin sauce, Mala Chicken with Sichuan pepper and dried chilies, and Chili Garlic Shrimp with summer squash, cucumber and lemon balm. Another highlight is the Glazed Maine Lobster with ginger and longevity noodles and green chili similar to what you will find at restaurants in NYC’s Chinatown. The lobster we sampled was top notch.

For now, the House of the Red Pearl is open to walk-ins during the Tin Building’s preview period. But get there early if you are hoping to snag a seat.
