Cititour Review:

Before the unbearable temperatures get you whining, grab a significant other and head to Imperial Woodpecker for a New Orleans-inspired shaved ice treat that will keep the heat at bay while putting a smile upon your face.

Owner Neesa Peterson, a fashion industry hopeful who has already done stints at both Gucci and Lancome, wanted to try something different, something that would instantly make people happy. Her answer came in the form of a sugary pleasure from back home that has achieved what is difficult to accomplish in a major city – created something new for New York – along with major buzz.

It’s easy to get excited about Imperial Woodpecker. The interior is as bright and hopeful as youth with its saturated colors, old-fashioned ice cream parlor tables, and, on the day we visited, big bunches of fresh flowers. The walls are decorated with Polaroid snapshots of Peterson’s first customers, an all-ages collection of smiles.

We tried two of the small Sno-balls, one Cherry and one Mojito, and were pleasantly surprised at the intense flavors. There are plenty of choices in terms of taste combinations, too, as you can mix flavors as well as try creamier varieties made with a splash of condensed milk, such as Coconut Cream and something called Sweet Lou’s Nectar. There’s a flavor here for everyone, from Root Beer and Pink Bubblegum to Tutti Frutti, Granny Smith Apple, and Birthday Cake, though the experimental among us will likely opt for Mardi Gras or Tiger Blood. Color me impressed.
