From Roma with love comes La Rossa. This well-designed pizza place in SoHo with natural wood-block tables and sculptured glass fixtures serves as a perfect backdrop for these authentic Italian pizzas. Chef Stefano Callegari, who has several restaurants in Italy, is making his first foray into the U.S. market and if this is any indication, there will be many more to follow. Individual round pies are offered, along with squares, called Quadrata. They come in tantalizing combinations like cherry tomato with bufalo mozzarella and fresh basil; eggplant, mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes; and red peppers with sauteed red onions served on a delightfully crunchy crust. The suppli, or rice balls, are also superb. Crack open the cruchy shell to reveal Carnaroli rice from Northern Italy prepared al dente. They arrived piping hot, including one in a metal cup., and include the Amatriciano (guanciale, tomatoes, pecorino romano, and black pepper), and the Ortolano (zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes and red pepper). A wonderful feast with a welcoming staff. Bravo!
