Lantern Thai Kitchen is a dependable, and often crowded, Thai spot on Montague Street in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. The restaurant is well-designed with inventive cocktails. It also boasts a large dining area outside making it great for people watching.
We started with a Som Tum salad made with shredded papaya topped with peanuts and a spicy lime-chili dressing. Crispy shrimp rolls had a nice crunch, while satay skewers come in two varieties, beef and chicken, served with a flavorful peanut sauce. Pad Thai here can stand up to what you will find at any good Thai restaurant and is large enough to serve as a main course. There are numerous curry dishes, including a yellow version, which offered intense heat. Most other menu items we tried were rather mild in comparison. Our least favorite dish was the pineapple roast duck which we found difficult to navigate.
One signature plate is the "Volcanic Chicken" served with a honey chili dipping sauce. Thai fried rice also appeared to be popular at nearby tables, along with coconut shrimp. While at the bar, mojitos and oversized strawberry slushies were being ordered in droves. Sake and lychee martinis are also available. Desserts include crispy banana wraps drizzled with a chocolate-caramel sauce, a chocolate lava cake, and green tea cheesecake. Service is quick and friendly.
