While exploring Brooklyn’s Chinatown, in Sunset Park, we came across a restaurant called Laojie on a side street off 8th Avenue. Waved in by a friendly worker, we decided to give it a try, and are glad we did. The restaurant specializes in hot pot where different meats, fish and veggies are dipped into a pot of steaming broth. Laojie offers an all-you-can-eat deal for $21 which really can’t be beat. It starts by choosing a broth. There are several types ranging from herbal to spicy. We opted for pork bone which was rich and flavorful. Next, choose from a lengthy list of items, including thinly-sliced pork belly, steak and lamb along with Chinese meatballs, sausages, silky tofu, head-on shrimp, blue claw crab, glass noodles, fresh spinach, mushrooms and more. We feasted until we we could feast no more. The servers were very helpful. We didn't feel rushed. Also, the space is designed in a way that the tables are not on top of one another.
