Talk about going to the dogs. Los Perros Locos on the Lower East Side is a restaurant dedicated to the hot dog. And when they say they pile it on, THEY PILE IT ON. Because it's all about the toppings.
On our visit, we tried the Mexi-Max, a hot dog smothered with Sriracha Pico de Gallo, chipotle kraut, ChipZana sauce (which I never heard of before), salsa verde, queso cotja and last but not least crushed Fritos. And yes, there is a hot dog under all of that. Some might say it's a heart attack on the bun, but it is tasty. Would I eat it every day? Probably not, but it is a great snack when you've got the munchies. Other menu items include the Pablo Escobar topped with Salsa de pina, apple chipotle slaw, potato chips, Kewpie mayo and a dusting of "Penco". They're also selling veggie dogs and chorizo, like the Chimi-Churi-Chori. This tribute to Buenos Aires features chorizo coated with grilled Provoleta, homemade chimichuri, Aji Panca aoli and crushed potato chips.
French fries also get special treatment here with traditional dishes like Salchipapas, Colombian street food made with wafflle fries and slices of hot dog. Colombian and Mexican soft drinks are also offered, along with lots of Cerveza, including brews from Peru and Costa Rica.
Los Perros is lively and fun. We were also appreciative of the friendly staff.
